Orthodontic Treatment for Teens

The most common time for orthodontic treatment occurs during adolescence, between ages 11 and 16. By age 12, most permanent teeth, if not all, have erupted, allowing Dr. Esther Lin to identify alignment, spacing, or bite issues that rarely correct themselves and often worsen with age.

This is also a favorable time for treatment because fewer negative and more positive associations with braces are present in this age group. A large number of children in this age group wear braces or aligners, and peers can often have a positive influence on the new and even exciting orthodontic experience toward a great smile.

Additionally, certain tooth movements are more effectively achieved before adulthood due to more favorable biomechanical bone properties in teens.

Teeth Straightening for Teenagers

Orthodontic treatment during the teenage years focuses on guiding teeth into proper alignment while the jaw is still developing. Treatment not only enhances a teen’s smile but also supports healthy function for speaking, chewing, and long-term oral health.

Cooperation from your teen plays a huge role in the length of treatment and the result we can achieve; our office will work with you and your teen as a team to encourage proper compliance with dental hygiene, elastic, wear, and braces and aligners home care instructions.

All braces and aligner options at SoWA are available for teens:

  • Metal braces – Durable and effective for addressing a wide range of orthodontic concerns.

  • Clear braces – A less noticeable braces alternative that blends in with natural tooth color.

  • Clear aligners – Removable aligners that can be a good option for certain lifestyle needs.

Our goal is to provide teens with treatment options that best fit their school, sports, and social activities while creating a healthy, confident smile that lasts well into their adulthood.
