Early Orthodontic Treatment

When Should a Child First Visit the Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic screening by age 7. At this age, Dr. Lin can assess your child’s dental development, determine if orthodontic treatment will be needed, and decide on the ideal timing.

Many general dentists and pediatric dentists in our community are trained to recognize early orthodontic concerns and may refer a child to us before age 7 if something needs closer evaluation.

Why Evaluate at an Early Age?

Early orthodontic evaluation allows us to:

  • Guide erupting teeth into more favorable positions

  • Preserve space for permanent teeth

  • Reduce the risk of injury to protruding front teeth

  • Prevent more severe orthodontic issues in the future
  • Help your child develop a positive experience with the dental care environment at an early age

Early evaluation does not mean early treatment. If treatment is indicated, Dr. Lin can help guide jaw growth, improve dental arch width, make space for incoming teeth, reduce the need for extractions, prevent impacted teeth, and address habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting.

Early intervention can make future orthodontic care simpler and more efficient once all the permanent teeth have come in.

Will Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces for Kids Later?

Early treatment can address significant issues, prevent more severe problems from developing, and make later treatment easier. However, because not all permanent teeth are present during early treatment, a second phase of Comprehensive Treatment (full braces during the teen years) is often needed for final alignment. In some cases, further treatment may not be necessary.

Does Every Child Need Early Treatment?

Not all children will benefit from orthodontic treatment at an early age. Some issues are best addressed during the teen years when all permanent teeth have erupted, while certain skeletal concerns should be treated only after growth is more advanced.

Dr. Lin creates personalized treatment plans for each child. If treatment is not yet needed, the patient may be placed in our SoWA Seedlings observation program to monitor growth and development until the timing is right for treatment.

SoWA Seedlings Observation Program

Children in this program are seen both in-person and virtually for regular check-ups, typically every 6–9 months, to track the growth of their jaws and the eruption of permanent teeth.

We will keep your family dentist informed of any recommendations. Sometimes, early removal of certain baby teeth can improve the eruption pattern and reduce the amount of time braces will be needed in the future.

There is no fee for this program; it is simply a way to ensure we begin treatment at the best possible time for your child.

Benefits Beyond a Beautiful Smile

Orthodontic treatment can:

  • Improve bite function

  • Make it easier to clean teeth effectively

  • Prevent uneven wear

  • Support long-term dental health and tooth longevity

Continuing Care with Your Dentist

Orthodontic appliances require extra attention to oral hygiene. Regular visits to your family dentist every 6 months for check-ups and cleanings remain an essential part of keeping your child’s smile healthy throughout treatment.
